Mapping Cville Project

November 23, 10am-2pm

Jefferson School African American Heritage Society

Jordy Yager, a local journalist, is currently a digital humanities fellow at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. His current project is called Mapping Cville; funding for the project is provided by a grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Fund.

The Project team and community volunteers have reviewed thousands of local property deeds (1888-1968) identifying those which contain racial restrictions prohibiting African Americans from living there.

The data will now be plugged it into a giant digital map, depicting the racialized historic landscape of Charlottesville, as well as providing a starting point for shaping more equitable regional policies going forward. Come hear about it and get involved!
