Myth and legend can reveal truth too great to be limited by fact. Jataka tales, traditionally viewed as the recounting of a past life of the Buddha, express a tenderness between the realms - human and animal - such as we might find in a literature of deep ecology. A Jataka tale, like all story, is to be felt and intuitively understood, not simply reasoned out.Compassion springs from insight into the fundamental equality of all living beings.
