We are meeting in person at 717 Rugby Rd in the Unitarian Universalist sanctuary and on Zoom.
SHAME
For many of us, simply hearing the word evokes a physical sensation. We have all experienced it: that flush of heat, the rapid heartbeat, the sinking feeling in the pit of our stomach. If only the world could swallow us up at this exact moment. This powerful emotion can feel debilitating, crushing, even paralyzing for a time. Karl Jung called it a soul-eating emotion.
And yet, The Buddha calls it a "quality that safeguards the world"; "a rare and fine quality"; "a treasure"; "a guardian"; and "associated with skillful qualities”.
Tonight we'll look at shame with an eye toward discerning when it might be viewed as positive, even beneficial, and when it is arriving as that "soul-eating emotion". What's the difference and how might we work with it more skillfully? Is it possible to cultivate one and not the other?
