Guided Meditation and Dharma Talk with Matt Fritts

Tuesday, May 19th, 2025, 7 – 8:30 PM

We are meeting in person at 717 Rugby Rd in the Unitarian Universalist sanctuary and on Zoom.

The Heart of Non-Meditation

In our culture of productivity and perfectionism, meditation often gets entangled with an overachieving mindset that can burn us out. Meditation can become another task to check off, another self-improvement project to "fix" ourselves, and even another thing we’re “failing” at. The paradox is that if we bring the striving mind into the very practice meant to free us from compulsive striving, it can fuel the very anxiety and "overdrive" we are trying to soothe.

Together, we'll explore:

  • the concept of "non-meditation"—a term used by teachers like Mingyur Rinpoche to describe resting in natural awareness,
  • how letting go of striving and the "mindfulness project" allows meditation to deepen, and
  • how practices like chanting can quiet the inner critic and open the heart.
