A Modern Look at the Second Noble Truth

The second noble truth, which describes the cause of our suffering, is one of the Buddha's most brilliant insights. However, he developed it in a very different world than the one we inhabit today. So, is it still relevant in our fast-paced, global, information-overload world?

Tuesday night's talk will examine the second noble truth as it applies in the modern world during a time when we know much more about how humans function from neuroscience and the multiple psychological theories that have been developed over the past century. Today we are faced with choices and options unimaginable in the Buddha's time. We will look at how the brilliance of the second noble truth is even more relevant today than it was 2500 years because of the exponential increase in situations where we find ourselves clinging and grasping.

Through a better understanding of the ways that our clinging and grasping causes suffering to occur in multiple contexts, we open the door to a greater reduction in our suffering and to finding true peace and freedom.

IMCC meets every Tuesday evening for a period of guided meditation and a talk by one of IMCC's experienced meditation teachers. The program is designed to be friendly and of interest to people with no meditation experience as well as more advanced practitioners.

This week's teacher: Jeff Fracher
